The Story of Niulang and Zhinu

Once upon a time, there was a kind and hardworking cowherd named Niulang. He lived a humble life with his only companion, an old ox. Unknown to Niulang, the ox was once a celestial being who had been banished to Earth.

One day, the old ox spoke to Niulang, telling him about a magical event where celestial maidens would descend from the heavens to bathe in a nearby lake. The ox advised Niulang to go to the lake and hide one of the maidens’ clothes so she would stay behind.

Following the ox’s advice, Niulang went to the lake and saw the beautiful celestial maidens. Among them was Zhinu, the youngest and most beautiful, who was the daughter of the Jade Emperor and a skilled weaver who wove colorful clouds in the sky. Niulang hid Zhinu’s clothes, and when the other maidens left, Zhinu had no choice but to remain.

Niulang approached Zhinu and explained what had happened. Despite the unusual beginning, the two quickly fell in love. Zhinu decided to stay on Earth, and they got married. They lived a happy life together and had two children.

However, their happiness was short-lived. When the Jade Emperor and the Heavenly Queen Mother discovered that Zhinu had married a mortal, they were furious. The Queen Mother sent celestial soldiers to bring Zhinu back to the heavens. Niulang devastated, tried to follow Zhinu with the help of the magical ox, who allowed him to fly to the heavens on its back.

The Queen Mother, seeing Niulang approaching, took her hairpin and drew a wide river in the sky to separate the lovers forever. This river became the Milky Way, separating Niulang and Zhinu.

Touched by their love and persistence, the magpies of the world took pity on them and formed a bridge over the Milky Way once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, allowing the lovers to reunite for a single day. This day is celebrated as the Qixi Festival, also known as the Double Seventh Festival or Chinese Valentine’s Day.

The story of Niulang and Zhinu is a cherished part of Chinese culture, symbolizing the power of love and the sadness of separation. It has inspired many poems, songs, and artworks, and the Qixi Festival is celebrated with various customs, such as star-gazing and making wishes for love and happiness.
